Orange Crush Impressed Willis

Eskimos defensive end Odell Willis was blown away by Edmonton’s passionate support of the NHL Oilers during the playoffs this spring.

Now he’s hoping to see some of that enthusiasm transfer to the Eskimos, who open their two-game CFL pre-season schedule against the Calgary Stampeders at 5 p.m. Sunday on The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium.

“I wouldn’t mind keeping up with those guys,” Willis said about the Oilers.

“I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ Out of 10 people, at least seven or eight people had on an Oilers jersey,” continued the ninth-year CFL veteran. “All of the games were intense. I had a good time at every one I went to.

“Just walking in and seeing orange, whether it was a jersey or a shirt, it was just orange! I was like, ‘Yeah, I can see what why they call it the Orange Crush. This is nice. I like it.’ ”

Willis even joined the Orange Crush, wearing the team’s bright orange third jersey at games with Eskimos receiver Adarius Bowman.

The Eskimos play their first home game of the regular season against the Montreal Alouettes on Friday, June 30, at 8 p.m.
