Eskimos Team Winners Announced for 2016 CFL Awards

Today, the Canadian Football League announced team winners for the 2016 CFL Awards. Eskimos recipients are:

  • Most Outstanding Player: Mike Reilly (unanimous selection)
  • Most Outstanding Defensive Player: Almondo Sewell
  • Most Outstanding Canadian: Sean Whyte
  • Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman: Justin Sorensen
  • Most Outstanding Special Teams Player: Sean Whyte
  • Most Outstanding Rookie: Brandon Zylstra

In this first ballot, FRC representatives from each CFL city, plus the respective head coach, submitted votes for the six categories. Voters were asked to select players from their local CFL club who, through on-field excellence, best represent the award titles.

The East and West Division winners for the 2016 CFL Awards will be announced on Thursday, November 12. The 2016 league top honours will be handed out on Thursday November 24 in Toronto.

Mike Reilly | Quarterback | Most Outstanding Player
In 17 games (17 starts), Reilly completed 448-of-633 passes (70.7%) for 5,554 yards and 28 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He is just the third QB in team history to attempt over 600 passes in a season and the fourth to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a season. He leads the CFL in completions, attempts and total yards. The Central Washington product also rushed 102 times for 406 yards and nine touchdowns. In a season filled with accolades, including three CFL Player of the Week honours and CFL Player of the Month for July, Reilly also recoded 12 300-yard passing games this season.

Almondo Sewell | Defensive Tackle| Most Outstanding Defensive Player
In 17 games (17 starts), Sewell recorded 34 defensive tackles, tops in the league for his position. He also recorded a team-leading nine quarterback sacks which is second in the CFL for his position.

Sean Whyte | Kicker | Most Outstanding Canadian & Most Outstanding Special Teams Player
In 17 games (17 starts), Whyte completed 43-of-46 field goal attempts for a league-leading 93.5% accuracy. He also made 45-of-51 converts. He carried a streak of 18 consecutive field goals made streak from last season into Week 4.

Justin Sorensen | Centre | Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman
Sorensen is an integral member of the offensive line who played in and started 15 games at the centre position.

Brandon Zylstra | Wide Receiver | Most Outstanding Rookie
The Concordia College (MN) product began the season on the Eskimos practice roster before he was activated in Week 14. In five games (five starts), he recorded 25 receptions for 322 yards and one touchdown. That first career CFL touchdown came in Week 16, against Montreal, on a 29-yard pass from Reilly.
