Maurer returns; Buhl released in Esks roster moves

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed veteran non-import FB Mike Maurer and import DB Gemara Williams, the club announced today.

It’s the second time that Maurer, the Most Outstanding Canadian in the 2005 Grey Cup,  has come out of retirement to rejoin the Esks. In 2008, he returned to play in the final four regular season games, recording three special teams tackles. He also appeared in the East Semi and East Final games.

Williams appeared in one game for the Montreal Alouettes in 2008 before suffering a season-ending knee injury.  He was released by the Alouettes in July of this year.

The Eskimos have released fourth-year import DB Jonté Buhl and rookie import DL Mike Newkirk.  Buhl appeared in 44 regular season games for the Esks since 2006, including eight this season in which he recorded 29 tackles, two knockdowns and an interception.
