Acquired: Re-signed on December 19, 2011. Originally signed as a free agent in May 2008.
2011: (Edmonton) Schiavone was the reserve list for the first eight games of the season, activated for 4 games, placed back on the reserve list for Games 13-17 and activated again for the final game. He was the field goal kicker in a total of 5 games and went 16 of 19 (longest 46) and 2 singles. Schiavone also played in the Western Semi-Final (1 of 2 on field goals) and the Western Final (3 for 3 on field goals).
2010: (Edmonton) Schiavone began the season on the 9-game injured list. He was activated in the second game in place of injured Prefontaine. He was on the reserve list for games 3 - 14. He returned to the active roster for Game 15 after Prefontaine was traded to Toronto. In five games Derek punted 25 times for 1008 yards (40.3 avg) and had 20 kickoffs for 969 yards (48.4 avg). He was 15 of 18 on field goals (longest: 45). He also had one special teams tackle. Derek was named CFL Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 16 when he had a perfect night for field goals going three for three, including two 45-yarders. He also had five punts for 177 yards and four kickoffs for 233 yards.
Career: After spending the 2008 season on the practice roster, Schiavone was activated for the final game of the season. He went three for three on field goals, had three punts for 109 yards (36.3 avg) and five kickoffs for 258 yards (51.6 avg). In 2009, Derek was the team's kicker/punter on Oct 30 vs. Toronto and went 5 for 5 on field goals and had five punts for 184 yards (36.8 avg) and nine kickoffs for 475 yards (52.8 avg). He also recorded a special teams tackle.
College/Personal: Schiavone played eight games his senior year and helped Western to a Yates Cup. That season he led the nation in punting with 61 punts for 2562 yards (42-yard average). He also had 31 kickoffs for 1563 yards and 14 successful field goals (longest 39 yards) with a percentage of 66.67. His 97 points in 2005 was the second-highest single season total in Mustang history and made him the leading scorer in the CIS. Schiavone attended Lakeshore Catholic High School (Port Colborne, ON) where he played soccer and hockey and the football team won three Niagara high school championships. He grew up a few houses down from former Eskimo OL Sandy Annunziata. His last name is pronounced Sha-VONE-ee
