Sams is entering his 35th season as coach and his 16th as an offensive coach. He was named the Eskimo Offensive Coordinator on January 25, 2013.
Last season, Doug was the quarterbacks coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats who led the league in scoring offence.
Sams spent 2011 as the offensive coordinator at EdinboroUniversity, enjoyed a four-year stint (2007-2010) as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Delaware State and coached the offensive line at Stanford in 2006. Prior to that, Sams spent 14 years as head coach at Northern Michigan (2002-05) and Fairmont State (1992-2001). At Fairmont State he compiled an overall record of 53-47 and led the Fighting Falcons to championships in 1996 and 2000. He was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1996.
In 1991 with the Ottawa Rough Riders, Sams oversaw an offense led by legendary quarterback Damon Allen who had a then career-high season and was named an Eastern Division All-Star for the first time in his career.
Sams' first stint with the Eskimos was with the 1987 Grey Cup championship team as special teams coordinator and defensive line coach. Prior to that, he was the offensive line coach with the Montreal Aloutettes in 1986.
Sams' coaching career began in 1978 when he served as a part-time defensive line coach at Oregon State. He followed that experience up with stops at Northern Iowa and Idaho State.
Doug and his wife, Brenda, have three daughters - Christina Reed, Tisha Haught and Kate. He earned his bachelor degree at Oregon State in 1978 and a Master's Degree from Idaho State in in 1984.
