(Edmonton) – Eskimos Fred Stamps, JC Sherritt, Ted Laurent, Joe Burnett, Almondo Sewell and Donovan Alexander have been named to the CFL West Division All-Star team. With the exception of Stamps, this is the first time each of these players have made the all-star team. Six Eskimos were named to the West Division All-Star team last season as well.
The Division All-Stars were selected by 70 voters, including members of the Football Reporters of Canada, CFL head coaches and CFL fans from across the country. Fans can go to www.cflallstars.com to make their selections for the 2012 CFL All-Stars. The final round of voting for fans closes on Sunday, November 13 at 11:00 a.m. MST. The CFL All-Stars will be announced in early December.
Stamps led the club with 70 receptions for 1,310 yards and nine touchdowns and was just 18 yards away from the league-lead for most yards receiving. Earlier this week, Stamps was named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month for October. This is his fourth consecutive CFL West All-Star spot.
Sherritt finished the season with a league-leading and recording-breaking 130 defensive tackles, as well as three special teams tackles, three sacks, one fumble recovery and five interceptions. This season, the Eastern Washington product was named West Division winner of the Gibson’s Finest CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award, Defensive Player of the Week four times and Defensive Player of the Month three times.
#94, Defensive Tackle
Laurent finished the season with 17 defensive tackles (three for a loss) and one special teams tackle. Laurent is tied for the team lead in sacks with six, including a sack in five consecutive games.
#22, Cornerback and Kicker Returner
In 18 games, Burnett registered 47 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, one fumble recovery for a touchdown, and a league-leading six interceptions for two touchdowns. He also handled kick return and punt return duties for the Esks where he returned 28 kickoffs for 573 yards and 52 punt returns for 440 yards.
#90, Defensive Tackle
Sewell had a share of the team lead in sacks with six and also recorded 31 defensive tackles (four for losses) in 15 games.
Alexander finished the season with 43 defensive tackles (one for a loss), five special teams tackles, two knockdowns, a forced fumble and four interceptions returned for 54 yards.
