(Edmonton) With 11 CFL seasons, nine with Edmonton and two Grey Cup rings to his credit, quarterback Jason Maas announced his retirement today.

Respected by his teammates and opponents for his strong leadership and fearless playing style, Maas was twice Edmonton’s nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award (2001, ’04) and was a CFL All-Star in 2001. The Oregon product earned a special place in club history in 2005 when he came off the bench in both the West–Semi Final and Final games to ignite the offence and engineer game-winning drives, propelling the Esks to their 13th Grey Cup championship.

In making the announcement, Maas says “ Edmonton and the Eskimos gave me an opportunity to fulfill a dream of playing professional football. To my many teammates, coaches, locker room staff and the many fans I met over the years, thank you for your support. This community welcomed me and my family and for that I am grateful.”

In 2004, Maas joined Hall of Famer Warren Moon as the second Eskimo quarterback to pass for 5,000+ yards in a season. He finished the ’04 campaign with career best numbers: 361 completions on 549 attempts (65.8%), 5,270 yards and 31 touchdowns, 79 carries for 252 yards rushing and 8 TDs.

Following the 2005 Grey Cup win, Maas was traded to Hamilton where he played for a season and half. Traded to Montreal in September 2007, he finished out the season with the Alouettes.   Maas returned to Edmonton in 2008.
