(Edmonton) Edmonton Eskimo running back Daniel Porter has been named Gibson’s Finest Offensive Player of the Week and kicker/punter Derek Schiavone Gibson’s Finest Special Teams Player of the Week for week 16 as the Eskimos defeated the BC Lions in a thrilling 31-28 overtime win.
Porter, who joined the Eskimos on September 15, rushed for 171 yards on 21 carries and was a pivotal player for an injury-depleted offense that saw two receivers leave the game early with major injuries. The Louisiana native was originally signed to a practice roster agreement and was activated for week 14 against Hamilton. Saturday’s game was his first start. He also had one catch for 11 yards.
Porter was a part of a very effective run game for the Eskimos in week 16. The Eskimos complied 346 rushing yards, 135 which came from quarterback Ricky Ray.
During his first appearance as the Eskimo starting kicker/punter, Ontario native Schiavone had a perfect night for field goals going three for three including two 45-yarders. He also had five punts for 177 yards and four kickoffs for 233 yards.
