(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed free agent non-import offensive lineman Simeon Rottier to a multi-year contract, the club announced today.
A native of Westlock, Alberta and standout at the University of Alberta, Rottier was taken first overall by Hamilton in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft. He played in 44 regular season games and four playoff games during his three seasons with the Tiger-Cats.
Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman says, “We're absolutely delighted to welcome Simeon back to Alberta as a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. Upgrading our offensive line in 2012 is one of our top off-season priorities and this signing is a big step in the right direction. Simeon is a young man of exceptional character who will be an excellent representative of our organization in the community.”
During his collegiate career at the U of A (2006-2008) , Rottier was a three-time Canada West All-Star, a first-team All-Canadian (2008), and played in both the 2007 CIS East–West Bowl and the 2008 NCAA East–West Shrine Bowl. He was the first player in Golden Bear history to be selected first overall in the CFL Draft. Rottier joins former U of A teammate Gord Hinse who was taken by Edmonton in the second round (11th overall) in the ’09 Draft.
Rottier says, “Being able to return to Alberta and play for the Eskimos in front of their incredible fans fulfills a lifelong dream of mine. The Eskimos have a very bright future and I’m excited to be part of it. I’d also like to thank the entire Hamilton Tiger-Cats organization for their support during my time there.”
